“The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory,” writes Pope Pius XII in Munificentissimus Deus (44).
This artwork seeks to capture that mystery, inspired by Revelation 12:1 – “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”
This great sign is expressed as an infinity-shaped cloud, evoking the solar analemma, a natural phenomenon tracing the sun’s annual path in a graceful and luminous loop. It envelops Our Lady as she ascends, symbolising God’s eternal nature – infinite love, mercy, and grace – and reminding us that God’s promises are not bound by time.
Four angels accompany her, representing the Marian solemnities – Immaculate Conception, Mother of God, Annunciation, and Assumption – and the cardinal directions, inviting the faithful to seek her intercession as they discern their path in life. Drawn into heavenly glory, Our Lady becomes a sign of hope for all humanity, a radiant assurance that our earthly pilgrimage can also end in divine embrace.
